Survey of 2,000 US employees finds 79% experienced conflict at work

It is common for companies to experience conflict at some point, as conflicts can arise in any organizational setting. Conflicts can occur between employees, between departments, or between the company and external stakeholders, such as customers, suppliers, or regulatory agencies. There are many factors that can contribute to conflict in a company, including differences in goals, values, or interests; power imbalances; misunderstandings or miscommunications; and personal or interpersonal issues.

Managing and resolving conflicts effectively is an important part of maintaining a healthy and productive work environment. Companies may have policies and procedures in place to address conflicts, such as mediation or arbitration, or may have designated individuals or teams responsible for managing conflicts. Overall, while all companies may experience conflict at some point, how they handle and resolve conflicts can have a significant impact on the overall health and success of the organization.

There is a large body of research on conflict in the workplace, and the following is one example of a study that looked at the prevalence and impact of conflict in the workplace. A survey of over 2,000 US employees found that 79% had experienced conflict at work in the past year, and 63% said that the conflict had a negative impact on their work (Gibson, et al., 2018).

Gibson, et al. (2018)

The study was designed to examine the prevalence and impact of conflict in the workplace, and the respondents were employees from a variety of industries and job levels. The most common sources of conflict were differences in goals or values, misunderstandings or miscommunications, and personality clashes. The study also found that conflicts that were not resolved effectively were associated with negative outcomes, such as reduced job satisfaction, decreased productivity, and increased absenteeism. The authors concluded that managing and resolving conflicts effectively is an important part of maintaining a healthy and productive work environment.
